About the event
The 23rd edition of the Mother's Day Walk For Peace, an annual city event organized by the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, provided a poignant platform for advocates, families, and community members to address the devastating impact of homicidal violence on victims' families and survivors. This event spotlighted the emotional, physical, and financial toll of violence, particularly on those who have lost loved ones. A staggering number of families, estimated at 150,000, are affected each year by homicidal violence across the country, emphasizing the urgent need for both peaceful neighborhoods and justice for these families.
Not only a significant awareness-raising event, but the Walk also served as a crucial fundraising initiative for the Peace Institute. The aim was to raise $400,000, which would directly contribute to their ongoing work to secure justice for communities and families that have been profoundly impacted by murder. The event unfolded on May 12, 2019, starting at Town Field Park in Fields Corner. Registration began at 6 AM, and the walk commenced at 8:30 AM following a program schedule. With a registration fee of $10 for walkers as a donation, participants came together to contribute to the cause. A beloved Boston tradition and celebration of our potential to create more peaceful communities. A six-mile walk from Dorchester to Boston City Hall to support advocacy, training and intervention services provided by the Institute, and to continue to demand dignity and compassion for all families impacted by murder.
